The first test against the Lions was full of heartache for Wallbies fans, with a laundry-list of injuries piling on the woe of missed O’Connor penalties and pure heartbreak for Curtley Beale in the dying seconds. But we learned a lot about both sides, and the men in Green and Gold showed that they would push the tourists every step of the way.

So the Lions head to Melbourne with half a job done, and with just one more win needed to seal a series victory. And they’re odds-on to claim the series on Saturday at $1.60, where Australia are at $2.35 to bounce back and set up a thriller in Sydney on July 6th. Look out, too, for some interesting betting markets: Israel Folau laid down a marker in the first test, and he’s at $3.00 to cross the whitewash again on Saturday ($8.00 to bag two or more…). The Lions have their own proven finishers, though, and both George North and Alex Cuthbert are at the same $3.00 to score (they’re both at $8.50 to score twice or more). Likely it’ll be a tight game, and it’s a brave man who’ll bet against the Wallabies to get their noses in front at some stage: they’re $1.40 to take the lead at some point, $2.75 to never get in front at all…

Australia have handed three players their test debut for the first test against the British & Irish Lions on Saturday.

Israel Folau starts on the right wing, after switching codes from rugby league and trying his arm at Australian football.
Christian Leali’ifano is picked ahead of Pat McCabe at inside centre and Ben Mowen starts at blind-side flanker.

Folau can be backed at odds of $13.00 to be first tryscorer and at odds of $3.60 to score a try at anytime.

Furthermore James O’Connor makes only his second test, lining up at fly-half starts at fly-half, with the troubled Kurtley Beale on the bench. Following his treatement for alcohol related issues, and the punching of two of his Rebels team-mates, Beale has only played one game of club rugby, but his undoubted talent sees him on the bench.

The Lions themselves have picked Alex Corbisiero for the first test after he wasn’t even in the original starting tour party.

The British & Irish Lions are favourites to win the first test at odds of $1.58, with Australia at odds of $2.50. The line is 3.5 points.

Sportsbet have a massive array of markets available, including the excellent ‘choose your own line’ market.

The full line ups are:

Australia starting 15: Berrick Barnes (NSW Waratahs); Israel Folau (NSW), Adam Ashley-Cooper (NSW), Christian Leali’ifano (ACT Brumbies), Digby Ioane (Queensland Reds); James O’Connor (Melbourne Rebels), Will Genia (Reds); Benn Robinson (NSW), Stephen Moore (ACT), Ben Alexander (ACT), James Horwill (Reds – capt), Kane Douglas (NSW), Ben Mowen (ACT), Michael Hooper (NSW), Wycliff Palu (NSW).

Replacements: Saia Fainga’a (Reds), James Slipper (Reds), S Kepu (NSW), Rob Simmons (Reds), Liam Gill (Reds) Nick Phipps (Rebels), Pat McCabe (ACT), Kurtley Beale (Rebels).

British & Irish Lions starting 15: Leigh Halfpenny (Wales); Alex Cuthbert (Wales), Brian O’Driscoll (Ireland), Jonathan Davies (Wales), George North (Wales); Jonathan Sexton (Ireland), Mike Phillips (Wales); Alex Corbisiero (England), Tom Youngs (England), Adam Jones (Wales), Alun Wyn Jones (Wales), Paul O’Connell (Ireland), Tom Croft (England), Sam Warburton (Wales, capt), Jamie Heaslip (Ireland).

Replacements: Richard Hibbard (Wales), Mako Vunipola (England), Dan Cole (England), Geoff Parling (England), Dan Lydiate (Wales), Ben Youngs (England), Owen Farrell (England), Sean Maitland (Scotland).

The Lions have been here long enough for the pundits and the fans to get a good look at them, and they look a powerful side, with plenty of big runners who can hurt the Wallabies come the first test on Saturday. As a result, the Lions are favourites to take the first game at $1.58. But there has been a bit of a feeling since the touring side touched down that Australia might just be up to the task of containing all that power, and that if they can be organised in defence, then the Wallabies will push the tourists close. As of today, you’ll get $2.40 on a green-and-gold win in the first test. Tempting for Aussie rugby fans, especially if you’re watching the game!

Elsewhere in the betting markets, there were a couple of things that caught our eye. We reckon the Lions will cross the whitewash at some point, and both George North and Alex Cuthbert are at $5.50 to be the first man in a red jersey to touch down. Not bad bets, but take a close look at Mike Philips at $10.00 to be the first Lion to register a try – we reckon that might be worth a go. With the kickers that the Lions have brought with them, odds of $1.33 for the first try to be converted look about right, but if the Wallabies defend narrow, that first try could easily be by a corner flag, and a miss might be good value at $3.00.
