It’s going to be one of the most exciting Melbourne Cups for a long time, if the horses on the shortest odds going into the final few days are anything to go by. We know that’s saying a lot, after Dunaden’s 2011 thriller, but there is some serious quality in the field, and anything could happen over the course of the race.

Whilst there are always winners and losers when the gates are drawn, it looks like there aren’t too many protests this year, and the race is still wide open. We’ve got a favourite, though, in Fiorente who’s definitely the horse to beat, and he’s a $7.00 bet right now on Sportsbet. Behind him are sitting Dandino and Mount Athos at $10.00 and then Hawkspur and Verema both on $12.00. Whichever way you think it’s going to go, we’ll definitely be watching (along with pretty much the whole nation!), and we’re expecting it to be a great race…

You can get all your Melbourne Cup odds 2013 just by following the link, and once you’ve made up your mind, then we recommend Sportsbet for all your betting needs!

Gai Waterhouse has plenty to be happy about going into the final preparations for the Melbourne Cup, with her horse Fiorente sitting alone on the shortest odds to win the Race That Stops A Nation.

A good performance in the Cox Plate has done nothing at all to change Fiorente’s status as favourite a week or so out from the Cup, and it looks like such a tough run has done nothing to upset his preparations, either. Fiorente’s jockey on November 5th will be Damien Oliver, and he was up-beat after a look at him following the Cox Plate run: ‘the fact that he had a pretty tough run going into a Melbourne Cup and that he’s pulled up well, it’s going to be exciting,’ he said. And owner Gai Waterhouse sounds pleased by her big Melbourne Cup chance with a week to go, too: ‘I’ve never had a better chance going into a Melbourne Cup. He’s sensational.’

As we’ve said, Fiorente is currently the favourite for the Cup, and a $6.00 bet on Sportsbet right now. Behind him are Mount Athos at $9.00 and Hawkspur at $10.00. Any of those three catch your interest for a bet? Or are you looking deeper into the field?

One-time Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune could be out of the race after a Cox Plate run that ended in injury. He’ll be assessed by trainer Darren Weir and owner Gerry Ryan, but there is a feeling that Puissance De Lune is a horse that has been hard to get up to race fitness for a while, and the bookies’ response has been decisive.

From being the one-time favourite, Puissance De Lune is nowhere to be seen today, and the favourite spot has been taken by Gai Waterhouse’s Fiorente, who’s now the horse to beat come November 5th. In stark contrast to Puissance De Lune’s Cox Plate fortunes, Fiorente came through the race in third place, and with an enhanced reputation that has meant little or no movement on his Melbourne Cup odds, which are $6.50 right now on Sportsbet. He’s ahead of Mount Athos at $9.00, Hawkspur at $10.00 and Dandino at $11.00 – get all your Melbourne Cup odds 2013 by following the link!

Mosse will be looking to quiet the critics, who are still vocal about his 2011 ride on Americain in which he was unable to keep the 2012 Melbourne Cup winner in contention. This year, he’ll be riding a horse with plenty of Melbourne Cup experience in Red Cadeaux, and who’s a $51.00 bet right now on Sportsbet. This will be Red Cadeaux’s third tilt at the Cup, and after an eighth place last year and an agonisingly-close second place in 2011, there will be high hopes for him. But there are plenty of horses in the field for this year’s Melbourne Cup who could win it: Fiorente is the favourite at the moment, and a $6.00 bet on Sportsbet as of today. Just behind Fiorente are Mount Athos at $9.00, Hawkspur at $10.00 and Dandino at $11.00.

It looks like owner Lloyd Williams could be preparing to make an unprecedented effort to claim the Melbourne Cup, with as many as seven horses lined up to compete in the Race That Stops A Nation…

A Cup victory would add considerable lustre to an already gleaming Spring for Williams, after Fawkner brought home a Caulfield Cup win. And, with five runners certain for November 5th and a couple more likely to make the race, he will be daring to dream big. Fawkner is a $34.00 bet for the Melbourne Cup at Sportsbet right now, but he’s not the only Lloyd Williams horse to be making the headlines: Green Moon is $41.00, Sea Moon is $17.00, Mourayan is $67.00 and Seville is $17.00. Yet to make the race are Masked Marvel and Tanby, but they’re not far from the cut and already attracting some attention with Tanby a long shot at $201.00 and Masked Marvel a much more tempting bet at $26.00. Whatever happens on November 5th, Lloyd Williams will feel like he’s in with a good chance of Cup glory, but are you betting on one of his runners, or do you fancy the favourite Fiorente at$5.50?

Whatever you’re betting, get all your Melbourne Cup odds 2013 by following the link…

But trainer Chris Waller will be hoping that Hawkspur can come good for him on the 5th, and improve on a Caulfield Cup run that saw him in seventh place.

The jockey for the Caulfield, Jim Cassidy, commented immediately afterwards that Hawkspur had finished the race strong, and he has since said that he’s not interested in swapping away his ride on Hawkspur for the Melbourne Cup. Waller was a little more cagey about one of his best chances for a Cup win: ‘he’s good enough to be in the Melbourne Cup, the question is now whether he runs the two miles. We will take that punt that he will.’ The prevailing opinion is that it’ll be better than a punt, and there will be plenty of people putting money on Hawkspur between now and November 5th. $10.00 seems like a decent return on a great horse with a good chance to take the Melbourne Cup…

Could a win in the Geelong Cup have put Ibicenco a healthy step closer to a run in the Melbourne Cup come November 5th? Certainly the Geelong Cup has been an interesting proving ground for Melbourne Cup runners in the past, and if the opinion of Greg Carpenter at Victoria Racing means anything to you, he’s given Ibicenco a 1kg penalty for the Cup, and that’s lifted him a little closer to a run.

A look on Sportsbet tells us that Ibicenco is a $67.00 bet as of today, and there’s no guarantee that he will run on the 5th, but that represents a pretty good return if he places, and there’s some history running in his favour. As Carpernter puts it: ‘Ibicenco underlined his staying ability by proving too strong at the finish of yesterday’s Geelong Cup that was run in testing conditions. The record of Geelong Cup winners has been outstanding in recent years in the Melbourne Cup with the three winners and two runners-up from the last eight to contest the race.’ The winners he’s talking about are Americain, Media Puzzle and also Dunaden, who’s a $41.00 bet for this year’s Cup…

Melbourne Cup hopeful Dandino will be ridden by top English jockey Ryan Moore come November 5th, with Moore replacing Craig Williams in the saddle. It’s a switch that will lend a little bit of interesting subtext to the Cup, as Williams will be aboard rival international import Mount Athos. We can’t help thinking that Moore will be happy with the ride he’s ended up with, given Dandino’s strong Caulfield Cup run that has left him as a $10.00 second-favourite for the Melbourne Cup.

And Dandino’s trainers are happy with the condition he’s in after the Caulfield and as he starts he preparations for Cup Day. Handler Paul Francis said he came through the Caulfield with just a few battle scars, and nothing to trouble him in the build-up towards November 5th. There was plenty to please the trainers, too, in his Caulfield Cup run: ‘the way he finished I think he’ll be suited by the extra distance in the Melbourne Cup. He’s only dropped seven kilos, which with that heat and the atmosphere is pretty amazing,’ said Francis. As we mentioned above, you’ll get $10.00 for Dandino right now on Sportsbet, whilst the favourite Fiorente is a $6.50 bet and the horse that beat Dandino to win the Caulfield Cup, Fawkner, is at $34.00…

Of course, you can get all your odds for the big race at: Melbourne Cup odds 2013…

Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner will carry extra weight when he attempts the Cup double on November 5th – but how will it affect his odds between now and the Melbourne Cup?

Racing Victoria’s Executive General Manager of Racing Greg Carpenter (who has maybe the best job title in the world…) has added an extra 1.5kgs to the weight that Fawkner will carry in the Melbourne Cup, and we can’t fault his reasoning: ‘Fawkner was strong on the line in the BMW Caulfield Cup at his first run beyond 2040m and has been penalised 1.5kg in the weights for the Emirates Melbourne Cup for his Group 1 victory.
“The 1.5kg penalty is the same afforded to Descarado (2010), Master O’Reilly (2007) and Sky Heights (1999) following their wins in the BMW Caulfield Cup. In the last 20 years only Viewed (1kg in 2009) and Dunaden (1kg in 2012) have received lesser penalties. On the strength of his win on Saturday I see no reason why Fawkner wouldn’t be very competitive in an Emirates Melbourne Cup with 54.5kg, which is 0.5kg less weight than he carried to victory on Saturday, after weights were raised 1.5kg for that race at final acceptance time.’
And there you have it. Meanwhile, after some fluctuation, Fawkner is a $26.00 bet on Sportsbet as of today, behind the favourite Fiorente at $6.50 and the horse he beat to win the Caulfield Cup, Dandino, who’s at $9.00.

There were some doubts before the final decision, with concerns over the distance apparently playing on his trainers’ minds before they decided to take the plunge, but Dandino is confirmed for the Melbourne Cup on November 5th.

It’s a decision that must have been influenced by a great run in the Caulfield Cup – and a feeling that a different barrier draw might well have seen Dandino win the Caulfield, and be lining up an historic double. As it stands, though, it’s Fawkner’s owners who will be dreaming of the double, and, come Cup day, it will be Dandino with a point to prove. At the moment on Sportsbet, Dandino is second favourite at $9.00 behind the $6.50 favourite Fiorente, where Fawkner is a $21.00 bet. After such a good run in the Caulfield Cup by Fawkner, though, we might be tempted by those odds…
