 Matty Johns has talked up his potential to be a future superstar of the game, and the Titans’ Ash Taylor has started the new season in the best possible style.

Despite playing just 47 NRL games to date, the Fox Sports pundit has hailed the Titans player as the future ‘best player in the world.’ The talented halfback tortured the Green Machine in a breathtaking Gold Coast performance which culminated in a sensational 30-28 victory; with Taylor and halfback partner Kane Elgey playing a part in all five of the Titans’ tries, helping to seal the greatest comeback in club history.

Taylor personally set-up four of the five scores, including the grubber kick that led to Konrad Hurrell crossing for the decisive try with just two minutes remaining on the clock.

The 2016 Rookie of the Year recently signed a lucrative new three-year deal at the club, and his opening day heroics have caught the attention of Queensland chief Kevin Walters. ‘We’re certainly aware of his abilities as a player from an Origin perspective’ said the Maroons coach.

The retirement from representative football of Jonathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk may open the door for Taylor this year after being named in the Senior Origin Emerging Squad for 2018. After a disruptive 2017 season for both club and player, the new campaign presents the opportunity for a fresh start with a new ownership model and coaching staff in place.

It may be premature for the Titans to be earmarked for a play-off spot, particularly given that they were the off-season favourites for the wooden spoon, but this 2018 season is going to throw up some startling results, round one has already paved the way for what could be a spectacular year ahead.
