NSW coach Brad Fittler has more or less confirmed that his first Origin squad list will include Tom Trbojevic’s name after the Manly star's impressive early season form. The 21-year-old seemed certain to make his representative debut last year until a crippling double knee and ankle injury blow prevented him making his bow.

Assuming that he can remain injury free, the younger of the Trbojevic brothers will earn his first Origin call-up for the series opener on June 6 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
He has been outstanding in his familiar role at fullback but Fittler hinted that he would find a spot for him regardless of the position.

The thinking is that such is his ability, he can be an asset wherever selected, and with James Tedesco a likely candidate to continue in the No.1 jersey, Trbojevic may be utilised at centre.

The deployment of a natural full-back in the edges is not an unusual tactic for the Blues, with Laurie Daley unafraid to select Josh Dugan and Jarryd Hayne as his centre pairing in 2017.

However, the experiment was ultimately unsuccessful as the Maroons emerged victorious for the eleventh time in twelve years.

Despite some worrying injuries to players competing for positions upfront, plus Andrew Fifita’s announcement that he has switched allegiance to Tonga, thus excluding him from Origin consideration, there is a palpable sense of optimism surrounding the Blues’ chances this year.

The appointment of Fittler has breathed new life into the squad who will go into the Melbourne encounter as $1.70 favourites to seal the 2018 series.
