Manchester United have returned to Spain in their search for a new central midfielder, after seeing bids for Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas fail, and being frustrated by a resolute Everton in their bid to sign Marouane Fellaini. A £26m (c. $45m) bid has been rejected by Athletico Bilbao for their Spain under 21 midfielder Ander Herrera, however our sources say United will return with a bid at the full buy our clause value, believed to be in the region of £30m ($55m).

New Manchester United manager David Moyes is a long time admirer of Herrera since before his 2011 move from Real Zaragoza, and is understood to be looking to buy both Herrera and Fellaini to bolster his troubled midfield.

Bilbao chairman, Josu Urrutia, stated today "There's an offer from Manchester for Ander Herrera, our club is different, it bases itself on sentiment. Our goal is not to make money. We consider Athletic a unique club and the players have to think like that. We received the proposal last night and we said that we don't negotiate for our players. For a player to leave, he first has to show that he wants to leave the club then deposit the clause."

The Basque's are known to hold out for full buy out clauses, just as they did with Javi Martinez who moved to Bayern Munich last season for the full $62m.

Herrera has played for Spain at Under-20 and Under-21 level, in addition to playing at the 2012 Olympics, but is yet to play for the senior squad.

Manchester United can be backed at odds of $3.60 to win the 2013 / 2014 EPL.
