Duff: Ireland can upset World Cup odds

Irish veteran Damien Duff believes his side can upset the odds today and qualify for the World Cup by beating France.

Ireland trail 1-0 from the first leg and need to win by two clear goals to go through in normal time.

But winger Duff thinks his team showed enough quality in the first leg to suggest they can pull off an upset and knock out the two-times world champions.

“We have taken an awful lot of positives out of the game on Saturday. Other people may not have but we think we can go there and do it,” said Duff.

“We have obviously given ourselves an uphill task, away goals are a massive thing in football but if we go over there and nick one it is game on again so we are all confident we can go and do it. You have to be.”

Latest World Cup odds at Centrebet put Ireland as the 6.25 outsiders to win Wednesday’s game, with France on odds of 1.53 and a draw at 3.75.

A draw is no good for the Irish following Saturday’s result, and a win by 1-0 would only send the game to extra time.
