Portugal will have to do without Ronaldo after all as they look to overcome Bosnia in the first leg of their World Cup play-off tie on Saturday.

The Real Madrid winger has been ruled out of the squad after tests confirmed he would not be able to play in Lisbon, or the return leg in Zenica next week.

Portugal have been favourites all week in the World Cup betting markets and are expected to win on Saturday and triumph in the tie overall.

Latest odds at Sportsbet have Bosnia as the 8.00 outsiders for the match, with Portugal at 1.40 for the first leg and the draw at 4.10.

Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz said: "In theory, we have an obligation to win. We are a serious candidate to be at the World Cup."

The home side on Saturday won their last three qualifiers in a row after drawing three matches – a run which saw them finish second in their group.

Portugal's defence will have to find a way of dealing with Bosnia striker Edin Dzeko, who scored nine goals in qualifying and helped Wolfsburg win the Bundesliga by netting 26 times last season.
