Betting tips: The Doggies have been all the rage here, firming in from $1.80 early to $1.55. That price is way too short, especially with Ben Barba lining up against them. Both these teams have a lot to prove this year, the Broncos especially after a dismal 2013, and these odds now make Brisbane a value bet. The Broncos are overs at $2.45.

Penrith Panthers v Newcastle Knights head to head odds

Betting tips: Round 1 odds are often distorted by punters piling into teams who've recruited heavily in the off season, exactly what's happened here. The Panthers have been crunched from odds against to $1.77 but they'll take time to gel. The Knights, albeit without Mullen, are solid, organised, fit and made the last 4 in 2013. We make the Knights the best bet of the week at $2.05.

Betting tips: It isn't often that Melbourne Storm are odds against in Round 1, but they've been drifting like a barge for this match. Bellamy has the Storm at peak fitness for this stage of the year and he's even shed 8kg off George Rose! That said, Melbourne have an ordinary record at Brookvale in recent years and the current odds look fair. No bet for us in this game, just an early season clash to savour.

Nth Queensland Cowboys v Canberra Raiders head to head odds

Betting tips: The Round 1 banker for most punters (even at cramped odds of $1.30) and it's hard to make a case for anything other than a comfortable Cowboys win. Boosted by their Auckland 9s win, North Queensland will be ready for this against a Raiders side with a new coach and some new faces. Take the Cowboys $1.30 in your multis or back them to win by 13+ points at $2.15

St George Illawarra Dragons v Wests Tigers head to head odds

Betting tips: A week one match up between two of the weaker looking teams in this year's comp and the bookies cannot split them at $1.90 each. A look at the NRL 2014 Premiership odds tells you all you need to know here with the Dragons at $41.00 and the Tigers at $51.00. St George looked poor in the Charity Shield and the Tigers did show some potential at the back end of 2013 and Wests should edge this at $1.90 for small stakes.

Betting tips: Our smokey for 2014 are the NZ Warriors. Horribly inconsistent in recent years but we think they're decent value at $15.00 for the whole thing, especially now with Sam Tompkins on board. He'll be an NRL superstar. Unless the Eels have done something special in the off season we'll be surprised if the Warriors don't win this comfortably. Take NZ minus 3.5 points on the Handicap line at odds of $1.90.

Cronulla Sharks v Gold Coast Titans head to head odds

Betting tips: Monday night football is back when the Titans travel to the Sharks. Gold Coast tend to struggle on travels to Sydney and they won't fancy a mauling from the Sharks first up either, which is what they'll get. Idris has moved on and it's difficult to see where the Titans will improve this year. Take the Sharks in all your round one multis at $1.58.
