Uruguay will have to avoid overconfidence to make good their world cup odds and win their play-off against Costa Rica next month.

Star striker Diego Forlan has said mental attitude will be part of his side's game plan after they missed out on automatic qualification for the finals.

Uruguay were beaten 1-0 by Argentina earlier this month, and face a two-legged showdown against the sleek-passing and tenacious Costa Ricans.

Despite the defeat to Diego Maradona's men, bookmakers have Uruguay as odds-on to reach South Africa 2010.

Star striker Diego Forlan was quoted by Goal.com as saying: "The preliminary phase is still going for us and we've still got a good chance of qualifying.

"We mustn't be overconfident or let our heads drop. We need to realise that we're two games away from qualifying and we can do it.

"Nobody likes being in this position but we've been there before and know how to approach it."

Betfair has them on World Cup odds of 1.20 to triumph over the two legs, played on November 14 and 18.

Uruguay have a reasonable recent record in play-off clashes, beating Australia over two legs to make it to the 2002 World Cup.
