The method of victory market makes very interesting reading. Mayweather is best priced at odds of $1.95 to win on points, whereas Pacquiao can be backed at best odds of $6.00 to prevail on points. But if the fight is won by Knock Out, it is Pacquiao who is the favourite at odds of $6.00, with Mayweather available at up to $7.50 to KO the Pacman.

Mayweather’s record is clearly better, with 47 fights and 47 victories, often described as the best pound for pound fighter on the planet, Mayweather has won 5 world titles at Welterweight and currently holds the WBC and WBA Belts. Pacquiao has a marginally less impressive record with 64 fights, 57 victories, 5 losses and 2 draws, however Pacquiao has won more titles with 6 Welterweight titles won. He is the current holder of the WBO belt.

Looking at the method of victory for each fighter shows that Mayweather has won by KO in 26 of his 47 victories, so wins by knock out in 55% of his fights. Pacquiao has 38 KO’s from 58 wins (67%) which means 59% of his total fights have ended in a Pacman win by knock out. Hence the bookmakers making Pacquiao the favourite if the fights ends in a KO.

With both fighters so evenly matched, it seems likely that the fight will last until the 10th or 11th round. If you think either fighter can get the job done in less than 10 rounds, you can get best odds of $3.85 on the Under 10.5 rounds market.

Expert Opinion

So how do the world’s boxing experts see this one ending?

Tipping Floyd Mayweather:

Kevin Baxter (LA Times) – Floyd Mayweather by decision
John Cherwa (LA Times) – Floyd Mayweather by decision
Barry Stavro – (LA Times) – Floyd Mayweather by decision
Ricky Hatton – UK – Floyd Mayweather on points
Amir Khan – UK – Floyd Mayweather
Oscar De La Hoya – Mexico – Floyd Mayweather
Bernard Hopkins – USA – Floyd Mayweather by decision
Lennox Lewis – UK – Floyd Mayweather by decision
Steve Carp – (Las Vegas Review Journal) - Floyd Mayweather by decision
Dan Rafael – (ESPN) - Floyd Mayweather by decision
Wladimir Klitschko – Ukraine – Floyd Mayweather

Tipping Manny Pacquiao:

George Forman – USA – Manny Pacquiao
Mike Tyson – USA – Manny Pacquiao
Miguel Cotto – Puerto Rico – Manny Pacquiao
Teddy Atlas (ESPN) - Manny Pacquiao by decision
Bill Dwyre (LA Times) – Manny Pacquiao by TKO
Lance Pugmire (LA Times) – Manny Pacquiao by decision

The UK’s Guardian newspaper polled 84 boxing journalists, insiders and ex fighters to find out the most tipped outcome:

Mayweather by decision 73.8%
Pacquiao by decision 21.4%
Pacquiao by knockout 3.6%
Mayweather by knockout 1.2%

So the opinions of the experts differ slightly from the odds, in that, whilst Mayweather is the clear favourite to win by decision, Pacquiao’s odds of winning by KO looks out of line with his odds of winning by decision. The best value bet therefore looks like backing Pacquiao by points at odds of $6.00, and the bets to avoid are a Knock Out by either fighter.
