Hewitt the Shanghai outsider despite straight sets opener
Posted on October 13th 2009 by
Australian Lleyton Hewitt is on odds of 80.00 to win the Shanghai Masters after beating American John Isner.
Hewitt came through the round 1 tie in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 and will now go into the draw for the second round.
Betfair have him as a long outsider for the event, with Novak Djokovic current favourite in its online tennis betting market at 4.50.
Behind him comes Spaniard Rafael Nadal at 5.40 and Juan Martin Del Potro at odds of 5.30.
Andy Roddick is at 12.00 with Betfair and is battling to recover his form after a loss early last week in Beijing.
He has also recently warned that the ATP schedule is now too tough and is in danger of wearing out the world's top players.
"It's ridiculous to think you have a professional sport that doesn't have a legitimate off-season to rest, get healthy, and then train," he said.
"We're finished - what is it - November 30 after the season-ending World Tour Finals in London, and have to be pretty much Grand Slam ready by January 4, year after year after year after year."
Roddick added industrial action would be a last resort on the part of the players but pointed out the recent injuries and rests needed by the likes of Roger Federer and Andy Murray.
