New Grand National Betting Favourite Emerges At Newbury

Posted on March 8th 2010 by TJ Dilfer

Following a surprise victory for Barry Geraghty at Newbury, Big Fella Thanks has rocketed to the top of the John Smith’s Grand National betting after beating Ruby Walsh on the race favourite Pasco. Even trainer Paul Nichols expressed surprise at the speed of Big Fella Thanks over the 2m4f trip in the Raymond Mould Supporting Greatwood Gold Cup.

His success shows a leap to Grand National favouritism at 8-1 (from 16) with Paddy Power, but he mostly shares the favourite spot with stablemate Tricky Trickster (with Totesport and Victor Chandler) and stands at 12-1 with Ladbrokes and Hills. Betting on Nicholls to win his first Grand National is at 11-2 and at 13-2 to win the Gold Cup and Grand National.

Walsh now has a difficult choice to make between the two stablemates for Aintree on the 10th April and Willie Mullins’ Snow Morning may also be a consideration. Although Tricky Trickster’s performance in the Gold Cup could be the deciding factor which may see him opt for the long-time ante-post favourite after all.
