A combination of Rafael Nadal's apparent good form and problems affecting his closest rivals could boost the Spaniard's chances for the Australian Open.

Nadal has been among a group of elite players who have criticised the length of the tennis season, and he himself was forced into a break earlier this year due to a knee problem.

He has showed strong promise in the Shanghai Masters this week, after the likes of Andy Roddick and Juan Martin del Potro withdrew from the competition through injury.

Nadal, who won last year's Open, is on odds of 5.60 with Betfair to defend his title in January.

The same online tennis betting market has Roger Federer as the current favourite, on odds of 3.55.

Nadal powered his way into the quarter finals of the Masters on Thursday with a straight-sets win over fellow Spaniard Tommy Robredo, showing no signs of the niggles which kept him out of Wimbledon.

Nadal said: "I am playing well, but we will see tomorrow,"

"When you come back after injury, you can't think more than the next day. I think when you are playing more matches, you win more matches, you have more confidence."

He was forced to sit out Wimbledon earlier this year and could be fresher for the Open than some of his peers, with Roger Federer also among those missing out on a shot at Shanghai after withdrawing from the running due to fatigue.
