Premier League Weekend Review – Round One

The English Premier League kicks off again this weekend with a couple of massive games to get us underway...

Tottenham v Man City

In a repeat of last season’s fourth place decider Tottenham and Manchester City go head to head in Saturday’s early kick-off game. It is entirely feasible that the team which Roberto Mancini sends out this weekend will be almost unrecognisable from the one which ended last season.

City have brought in a whole host of new players this summer including the likes of David Silva, Yaya Toure, Jerome Boateng and Aleksandr Kolarov whilst youngster Joe Hart could also go straight into the starting line-up. Tottenham conversely haven’t brought in anyone and will thus put out a starting XI akin to the one which secured Champions League football for the season ahead.

The question to ask here is whether City’s new stars can immediately gel as a unit. If they can then I like the look of the $3.00 being offered by sportsbet on an away win, but I think that the more sensible option would be to go with the $2.10 on City in the Draw No Bet market.

Liverpool v Arsenal

Despite enduring a terrible season last time out Liverpool fans have reason to be optimistic heading into the new campaign. The appointment of Roy Hodgson has been followed by the signing of Joe Cole and both Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres committing their futures to the club. And they may be primed to get their season off to a flyer with a home fixture against Arsenal.

The Gunners are without several key players ahead of the trip to Anfield and could be forced to play youngsters Jack Wilshere and Emmanuel Frimpong in the centre of their midfield. Arsene Wenger is already without Cesc Fabregas, Denilson, Abou Diaby, Nicklas Bendtner, Andrei Arshavin, Johan Djourou and Alex Song and is waiting until the last minute before making a decision on the fitness of Robin van Persie.

If there is a good time to play Arsenal then surely it is now. And although odds of $2.40 with Sportsbet may not be appealing at any other time of the season I think they are a generous evaluation of Liverpool’s chances this weekend.
