England v USA
England start their campaign in the group of (bore you to) death with what looks on paper to be their most difficult game. The game is against the Confederation Cup runners up, the USA. The USA impressively defeated Euro 2008 champions Spain in that competition, eventually giving away a two goal lead in the final losing 3-2 to Brazil.
The tournament demonstrated what a well organised outfit the U.S are these days that could give many teams plenty of problems.
England though qualified for this competition at a canter, losing only one game (1-0 in the Ukraine), and facing a side like the U.S, who play in a familiar style with many familiar faces playing for them will surely be right up England's street..
Don't expect a repeat of the shock that happened in the 1950 World Cup, where the U.S won 1-0. England should win this without too much bother and the 4/7 on offer looks a very decent price.

Recommendation - 10pts England @ $1.44 with Sportsbet

Japan v Cameroon
I really believe the African nations are going to enjoy fruitful World Cup campaign in this African World Cup. The Indomitable Lions, otherwise known as Cameroon are Africa's most successful World Cup side, and if Samuel Eto'o has his shooting boots on I feel Cameroon are a side that will be worth following.. 18 of Japan's 23 man squad ply their trade in Japan's J-League, and while this league has definately made forward strides in the recent past, players from the league tend to lack a cutting edge.
At 6/5 Cameroon should not be missed to roar to victory.

Recommendation - 10pts Cameroon @ $2.20 with Sportsbet

Honduras v Chile
The general way of thinking is that Honduras are in for a hammering at this World Cup.. Well that might not just be the case, in their only other World Cup excursion, back in 1982, Honduras performed admirably. They drew games against Spain and Northern Ireland before losing to a last minute penalty in their final group game against Yugoslavia.. There are reasons to believe that this side could at least match that performance in what is not the strongest looking group - Wilson Palacios (Spurs), is one of a number of European based players in this side that could ruffle a few feathers.
Chile qualified for these finals with relative ease, finishing just a point behind Brazil in the South American qualifiers, but this still doesn't look like one of the stronger sides that Chile has produced.. The one occasion that these two sides met was in a friendly match last year which Honduras won 2-0!!

Recommendation - 3pts Honduras @ $6.00 with IASbet & 7pts Draw @ $3.75 with Sportsbet

France v Mexico
Possibly the luckiest side to make it through to the finals, France. Versus the side for whom it is nearly impossible to miss out on the finals because of the ease of their qualifying group, Mexico.
The French are unlikely to have many supporters after dumping out the popular Irish side with infamous 'hand of frog' incident, but that shouldn't really be of concern to them as get little support fom their home nation anyway. Of greater concern for the French will be the lack of goals they score, they managed only 20 goals in 12 qualifying games, and that included five goals in one match against the Faroe Islands, and of course the goal that should have never been against the Irish. France coach, Raymond Domenech, has an ageing team at his disposal and must be worried about an early World Cup exit.
As for the Mexicans, they are always very hard to evaluate coming into this competition.. Sometimes they play with real South American flair while on other occasions they can be terrible. Having watched the Mexicans at Wembley recently against England I feel this class should make it to the second round but are unlikely to progress much further.
France have a very good record against Mexico having won five of their previous six encounters, but I think the Mexicans will have enough to snatch a point in will what should be a low scoring game.

Recommendation - 10pts Draw @ 3.25 with Sportsbet

Ghana v Australia
Australia were so unlucky to be knocked out of this competition in 2006 against Italy, but this is a poor side in comparison to that one. Australia rely far to heavily on the services of Everton's Tim Cahill, and if he does not score it is hard to see where the goals will come from.
Ghana were beaten in the Final of this year's African Cup of Nations, and although that tournament was short of quality, expect the African sides to put up improved performances during this competition.
No matter what the result in their first match against Serbia, Ghana will feel this is a must win game with the Germans waiting in their final match..
Ghana look over priced for this match against inferior opposition.

Recommendation - 10pts Ghana @ $2.30 with Sportsbet

Portugal v Korea DPR
It is impossible to write about this game without mentioning Korea DPR's (then more commonly known as North Korea), exploits in their only other participation in the World Cup. This was of course back in 1966 at Ayresome Park, when the team upset Italy 1-0 to gain a spot in the quarter finals. There, they lost 5-3 to Portugal despite taking a 3-0 lead in the 24th minute. In this nation famous for it's propaganda, this match will no doubt be replayed many times before they meet the Portuguese again in this years World Cup - Just don't expect to see the five Portugal goals!!.. (footnote - Has there ever been a more inappropriately named nation than the Democratic People's Republic of Korea!!)
Semi Finalists in the last World Cup, Portugal, made a song and dance about qualifying for this one, only managing to get through via the play offs, eventually beating Bosnia-Herz' 2-0 on aggregate. Although laden with talented players, Portugal have struggled for goals in recent times, just recently drawing 0-0 with the power house Cape Verde Islands. Also the Portuguese commitment can sometimes be questioned, which is something you can be sure won't be lacking from the Koreans game..
Call me crazy, but I can smell an upset in this fixture. The Koreans will play neat and tidy football and have their share of possession and might just nick a goal and a victory into the bargain!!

Recommendation - 4pts Korea DPR @ $21.00, 6pts Draw @ $6.00. Both odds available with Centrebet and IASbet

Greece v Argentina
Oh how I wish I could have all my points on this game. How can Argentina be available at 8/11 to beat Greece??
Alot has been made of how Argentina nearly missed out on qualification - That is all garbage. The Argies were never going to miss out. Even if they hadn't have scored a late winner against Uruguay, the Argentinians would still have gone into a play off match against Costa Rica... Now come on!!
I agree that Maradonna is a fool and should not be taking this side to a World Cup, but this is a country that can choose from Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero, Diego Milito, Gonzalo Higuain, Javier Mascherano, Maxi Rodriguez and the list goes on..
The one time these two sides have met was back in the 1994 World Cup, when Maradonna put on a show and the Argentines destroyed Greece by 4 goals to nil.
Greece failed to win their away leg in Moldova, and could only scrape past the might of Luxembourg 2-1 at home during their own qualifying campaign, and will surely not be good enough in their defensive style to halt the Argentine offensive might.
The one thing stopping me emptying my daughters piggy bank to put as much as I possibly can on Argentina for this game, is the fact it is their last match in the group, and so it is perfectly feasible Argentina will have already qualified going into the game.

Recommendation - 10pts Argentina $1.72 with Sportsbet

Ghana v Germany
Ghana's coach Milovan Rajevac will be praying Michael Essien manages to be fit for this game even if he misses Ghana's first two matches of the tournament. Essien is amongst the best midfielders in the world and his participation could prove crucial to the Ghanaians progress. Saying that Ghana are a one man team though would be unfair, with the likes of John Mensah of Lyon, Kevin-Prince Boateng from Portsmouth and Inter Milan's Champions League winner, Sulley Muntari all available for selection.
Germany only 14/1 for the competition outright will be expected to be as mechanical and as efficient as ever, and will certainly be no pushovers. But with conditions in the Ghanaians favour I think they can avoid defeat to the Germans and can progress into the second round.

Recommendation - 5pts Ghana @ $5.00, 5pts Draw @ $3.50 with Bet365.com

Korea DPR v Ivory Coast
Korea DPR's final group game in their very real group of death comes against a strong looking Ivory Cost outfit. The Ivory Coast played in their first World Cup Finals in 2006 and were a breath of fresh air playing in three highly entertaining games, losing to Argentina and Holland, before beating Serbia & Montenegro in their final group game 3-2. Les Elelephants as they are nicknamed, will have learnt alot from that experience and although they were very disappointing in the latest African Nations Cup, a competition in which they started favourites. I would still expect them to trample over this sort of opposition..
Drogba's combative presence will prove far too much for the diminutive Koreans and the Ivory Coast will win this match easily in their home continent.

Recommendation - 10pts Ivory Coast @ $1.25 with Centrebet
