Grudge, rivalry, derby, whatever the term, 'competition with an edge' is a theme for the AFL this weekend.

Friday sees Carlton take on Collingwood at the G in a battle between what are widely considered to be the biggest rivals in the sport.

Carlton will make it four in a row if they beat Collingwood, and could make it into the top four if they pull it off.

Carlton have also won their last three matches, while Collingwood went down in their last fixture but won four in a row before that result.

However, AFL's Ben Broad wrote this week that it can be tricky to figure out just how decent the current Carlton crop are, adding beating the Pies would "add credibility to their top-four hopes".

Another beauty in this weekend's more heated fixtures includes the Perth showdown between the Eagles and the Dockers.

Ahead of the weekend the West Coast Eagles have gone down four times in a row to their fierce rivals, but Fremantle are struggling for form at the moment.

They are turning to new blood again, having announced midfielder Jay van Berlo will make his debut on Saturday.

"The first-year players we've brought in before have performed so we're expecting Jay to do the same," Football administration manager Brent Dawkins said on the Dockers' website.
