Alcopop provides fizz for Melbourne Cup betting

An eye-catching win in Saturday's Herbert Power Handicap at Caulfield has propelled Alcopop up the Melbourne Cup betting markets.

The promising stayer was re-handicapped on Monday and has shot to 8.00 joint second favourite for November's show piece, level with Speed Gifted.

Efficient heads the market with Centrebet, on odds of 6.00, with Viewed currently fourth in the betting on 10.00.

Alcopop will now carry 52.5kg into the big one on November 3, and is virtually guaranteed an entry into the country's biggest race.

Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter said: "Alcopop has demonstrated enormous progression since the weights were originally released and his win in a truly run staying contest on Saturday was totally dominant."

Elsewhere, Allez Wonder has been penalised 0.5kg for the Melbourne Cup following her surprise win the Toorak Handicap on Saturday.

The mare has moved from 49th to 17th in the elimination order, guaranteeing her a place in the race for trainer Bart Cummings.

Allez Wonder is on odds of 21.00 for the Melbourne Cup, again with Centrebet, which puts her just behind Cima de Triomphe and Daffodil on 17.00.
