When GWS beat the Gold Coast Suns last week, it should have been a wake up call to bookmakers and pundits alike. Times are changing in the AFL, no longer are the dominant sides routinely smashing the minnows by 150 points.

In the space of a few days, those TV and radio pundits who have spent the last 12 months bagging the GWS Giants have suddenly gone quiet. And with good reason.

The Giants head to Brisbane this week with a realistic chance of running a poor Lions side very close, and they can be backed at odds of $4.60 with Sportsbet.com.au and $4.50 with Centrebet.

Both bookmakers offer odds of $1.92 on the Giants winning with a handicap line start of +30.5 points, which looks great value.

Bookmakers have priced up Hawthorn v Fremantle as though Hawthorn are playing at home, but they're not, this game takes place in Tasmania. And the Hawks are inconsistent, and were smashed by Sydney the last time they played there. So on a neutral venue there is a great chance to back the Dockers at huge odds of $4.80 to win the game outright. If you want to take a more convservative approach, then back Fremantle with a a handicap line start of +29.5 points at odds of $1.91.

Back in Melbourne, and based on recent form, Adelaide are massively overpriced at $2.95 to beat a Carlton side low on confidence after being bullied by St Kilda on Monday. Again, for those of you who like to bet on teams with a handicap line start, Adelaide are on offer at $1.92 with a +17.5 start.

St Kilda also merit some consideration against a tired and injury plagued West Coast outfit, and backers might be rewarded at $3.00.

AFL betting for Round 8 is one for the more pragmatic bettor, with lots of real value around. Especially with some huge AFL free bets on offer at Sportsbet.com.au and Centrebet.
