The long road to the Cox Plate begins for an exciting four-year-old among the favourites in the 1200m Aurie's Star Handicap at Flemington on Saturday.

Mic Mac will team up with Damien Oliver at the weekend having been defeated only once in six starts so far.

Trained by Greg Eurell, the horse made a mark at the the Melbourne Festival of Racing and Sydney Autumn Carnival, Racing Victoria says.

Mic Mac "thrashed his opposition with an arrogant win" over 1200m at Moone Valley on Pulse Pharmacy Australia Stakes Day.

This was followed by a Group Two 1400m Hobartville Stakes win at Rosehill, and last Monday he eased to victory in a trial at Cranbourne.

Nine are in the field for Saturday's race and Mic Mac faces a big test against the likes of Gran Sasso and last year's Aurrie's Star winner, Grand Duels.

Quoted by Bloodstock.com.au, Eurell said: "He's amongst the big boys now, but he's given us every indication that he's back to his best if not a little bit better so I hope he is and he'll need to be.

"But he's a good sound horse and he's lightly raced, he's only had six runs.

Bookmakers agree, with Mic Mac the favourite at odds of 2.50 with Gran Sasso folowing on 2.80 via IASbet.com.
