Stayer Efficient has been among the big drifters in horse racing markets for the Melbourne Cup, as doubts remain over the fitness of the 2007 winner.

Officials and stable staff are keeping an eye on the horse's long-term problem with a foreleg, with a number of inspections due to be held in the run-up to the race.

At one stage Betfair had Efficient at 7.60 joint-favourite, but this has now moved out to 10.50.

Betfair's market information shows the price has climbed towards the end of the week, with Alcopop the current favourite on 6.20.

Bart Cummings-trained Viewed is next on 6.80, while another of his horses, Roman Emperor, is on 11.00 and is the current fourth favourite.

Efficient's odds may drift further as long as doubts remain about the fitness of the six-year-old.

Other recent movements in the Melbourne Cup betting market at Betfair include Zipping, who has gone from around 200.00 at one stage to around 24.00.

Godolphin stable horse Kirklees has also been dropping steadily, opening at over 300.00, before falling below 50.00 and gradually declining to the current price of 26.00.

Stable star jockey Frankie Dettori is on his way out to Australia to partner Kirklees in Tuesday's nation-stopper.
