Officials say the Flemington track is still in prime condition heading into the last hectic day of racing betting for the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Track manager Mick Goodie said the surface had held up well through the week and is expected to perform well for Saturday's Emirates Stakes day.

Nine races are on Saturday's card, including the headline Emirates Stakes, the Patinack Farm Classic and the Matriarch Stakes.

Goodie said: "I'll be putting four to five millimetres of irrigation on tonight with the objective of delivering a dead 5 track in the morning that can be upgraded to a dead 4 and then later a good 3."

On Friday morning the overall penetrometer was 4.92 with the inside of the straight track 4.87 and the outside 4.86.

Goodie said 5mm of irrigation was applied last night, taking to 25mm the amount applied over the past week. In addition, 10.8mm of rain has fallen over the past seven days.

The rail position is out eight metres for the entire circuit for tomorrow's meeting.
