Geelong Cup winner looks for Melbourne Cup passage

 Mare Leica Ding won the Geelong Cup and condemned leading international contenders to another poor showing on Wednesday.

The chestnut could now head to the Melbourne Cup after beating off Bart Cummings-trained Dandaad and UK raiders Crime Scene and Basaltico.

The $200,000 race was the second poor major event showing in five days for the imports, after the likes of Kirklees failed to make an impression in the Caulfield Cup on Saturday.

Leica Ding's trainer Darren Weir conceded the five-year-old's victory may still not be enough for a Melbourne Cup entry and said a good Derby Day showing may be needed.

He told TVN racing: "I guess if we're going to push on that way I suppose.

"We came into the preparation aiming at ... the Geelong Cup ... and that was our way to try and sneak into the Melbourne Cup."

Current Melbourne Cup betting markets at Centrebet have Efficient as the favourite at 6.00 while Leica Ding is at 35.00 with the same bookmaker.

Viewed is second favourite at 6.50 while Speed Gifted and Alcopop are level on 7.00. Roman Emperor, second in the Caulfield Cup, is on 11.00.
