The 2010 Doomben Cup

Held at Doomben Racecourse on the 22nd May this year, the Doomben Cup is a 2020m staying race which is designed to test any horse’s strength and endurance. The event takes place during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival and is classed as a weight-for-age race for horses aged three years and older.

With prize money of half a million dollars, the Group 1 race attracts many trainers, jockeys and horses from around the country. The top lead up race to the Cup is the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) held two weeks earlier at the Gold Coast.

The first race in 1933 was won by Pentheus and it is considered that the Doomben Cup’s greatest winner is Rough Habit with three consecutive wins from 1991 to 1993. Between 1933 and 1937, the race distance was 10 furlongs, however this was changed to 11 furlongs between 1938 and 1972, being temporarily increased to 2160m in 1989.

Notable winners of this Stakes/Cup double are Above Deck in 2006, Mr Bureaucrat in 2002, Might And Power in 1998, Danewin in 1995, Durbridge in 1994 and Rough Habit in 1991 and 1992.

IASbet have Metal Bender as the $2.90 favourite on Saturday, followed by Road To Rock ($4.10) and Gold Water ($7.00)
