Five Japanese entries in this year’s Melbourne Cup, as the famous Yoshida family celebrate the lifting of quarantine restrictions.

Not since the outbreak of equine influenza in 2007 has Japan been able to contest the race, but in this the 150th Cup, quarantine restrictions have been lifted. Katsumi Yoshida, owner-breeder dominated the Melbourne Cup in 2006 with supreme performances from Delta Blues and Pop Rock.

In this year’s Group 1 Tenno Sho, Australian jockey Craig Williams rode Jaguar Mail to victory, beating last year’s Tenno Sho winner Meiner Kitz into second place; both are among 45 internationals nominated for this year’s Cup.

Racing Victoria has reported 253 entries, 22 more than last year for the $6 million Melbourne Cup. The Caulfield cup was up 8 on last year, with 235 nominations, with 186 hopefuls in for the Cox Plate (down by 10 on 2009),

This year’s entries include four horses from two-time Cup-winning trainer Dermot Weld headed by Profound Beauty. Godolphin have nine nominated runners and still seek that elusive Cup breakthrough after second placings with Central Park, Give The Slip and Crime Scene, while Luca Cumani has five.

In a bid to win the Melbourne Cup for the 13th time, Bart Cummings has nominated 12 runners.
Racing Victoria scout Leigh Jordon has stated that this year’s entries represented "the best selection of stayers ever seen in a Melbourne Cup". Whilst Cummings, 81, commented that ‘It’s always tough”; he added "It's the 150th. We thought we'd pay up for a few more, give the VRC a bit more money. It's the same as every year; we'll just go about trying to get as many as we can into the race."

Sadly, Viewed, who won the Melbourne Cup in 2008 and the 2009 Caulfield Cup, was put down after suffering a colic attack earlier this year. Cummings' entries include Cox Plate winner So You Think and VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume. Some of his other runners, such as Empires Choice, Moatize, Dariarna, Precedence and Sirmione, are proven performers.

The rest – Brightnight, Joe Blow, Landlord, Star Ripper and Zabdued – will have to scramble for a place in the 24-horse field. Cummings has said it’s far too early to become too excited about his Cup dozen and he doesn’t have a track favourite, insisting we’ll just have to wait and see.

Unfortunately, SYDNEY'S champion jockey Nash Rawiller has developed pneumonia and is expected to be out of the saddle for up to two weeks. "The doctor has put me on a very strong course of antibiotics and ordered me to rest up as much as possible," Rawiller said. "At least this has happened now and not when the Group 1 races are being run." Rawiller was also set to team with Theseo, More Joyous, Once Were Wild, Descarado and Herculian Prince in barrier trials on Friday.

Glyn Schofield is named as the new rider for Brightexpectations (San Domenico) and Cannonball (Missile Stakes) on Saturday.

Kevin Dixon, the chairman of BRISBANE Racing Club, has defended the recent decision to deliver broadcast rights to SKY Channel, however Racing Victoria Chief Executive Rob Hines has said he felt "racing missed an opportunity" after Queensland clubs voted to overlook TVN in favour of SKY.

"TVN made it very clear they only had partial interest in Queensland and it was very important to us that we did nothing to jeopardise the interests of our kindred clubs in Queensland," Dixon said. "It was clear that SKY had a better outcome for the whole of Queensland and any other decision made by th
