 Four-year-old Descarado has proved to be a shining star for Gai Waterhouse by winning the 2010 Caulfield Cup in Race 8 at Caulfield.

In a brilliant ride by jockey Chris Munce, Descarado backed off the pace and waited for the final few hundred metres to put in a bid for the finishing line. This turned out to be a winning move, which handed Waterhouse her 102nd Group 1 victory and her maiden Caulfield Cup win to add to an impressive list of successes. It was also a victory which marked Munce’s first Caulfield Cup win as a jockey.

Descarado is a Kiwi-bred horse whose return to form to put in the staying performance of the day rewarded punters who backed him at a great $15 price, making it the best payout of the Caulfield meeting.

After a disastrous recent run at Flemington saw High Chaparral gelding Descarado finish 14th to Zipping in the Turnbull Stakes, the Caulfield Cup allowed Descarado to show a massive improvement scoring a dominant win in the $2.5 million(2400m) race.

Waterhouse’s other runner Herculian Prince was more fancied and took the early lead, with Alcopop settling last off the speed. The betting favourite Shocking was also well back in the field and got caught up in the running, never threatening the final result. Triple Honour over-raced and was in the lead with 700m to go, but ran out of steam as the other contenders began to make their move on the outside of the field.

Descarado kicked hard and stormed into the lead, with another New Zealand bred runner Harris Tweed threatening to steal the front running on the wide outside.

Descarado and Harris Tweed battled it out and just as Harris Tweed looked ready to take the race, Descarado dug in and claimed the victory in the 2010 Caulfield Cup.
In a photo finish for third, Monaco Consul had the edge, finishing off the high paying Trifecta.

Descarado is now a $13.00 poke for the Melbourne Cup.
