Sunday's AFL betting could be dominated by an upset, if the coach of Essendon is to be believed.

Matthew Knights' side take on unbeaten St Kilda at the Etihad Stadium and need a win to get into the top eight.

His optimism is based on the fact Essendon fared well against the 'invincibles' despite going down by 19 points in their round eight tie.

Knights was quoted by Fox Sports as saying: "We certainly respect everything they've done this season thus far but in saying that we've got to do everything in our power to win the football game and it's our guys' belief they can do it."

The stats make the belief appear more like hope – while St Kilda have 19 wins from 19, Essendon have eight wins, one draw and ten losses from their 19.

Essendon are in ninth, just two points behind eight-placed Port Adelaide.

However, Knights' words could be more than a hopeful way of instilling confidence in his players – the side should go into the clash with Andrew Welsh and Andrew Lovett, although captain Matthew Lloyd is a doubt.

Anyone who does fancy Essendon – and St Kilda do have to lose at some point – can get 6.00 for an Essendon win Sportsbet.com.au.

On the other hand the same bookmaker will give you 1.20 for St Kilda to hold on to their record all the way through, or 4.50 that will finally face a defeat before the end of the home and away season.
