Irish Lights a bright chance thanks to barrier draw

Current favourite Irish Lights has drawn barrier eight for Wednesday's Thousand Guineas, with second favourite Sister Madly in barrier two.

The midweek 1600m group 1 race also features Melito and Silent Surround, ridden by Damien Oliver.

Irish Lights is on odds of 2.50 with Sportsbet, while Sister Madly is at 6.00 and Melito is on 9.00.

Jockey Glen Boss, who has won the Melbourne Cup three times, told the Sydney Morning Herald he has faith in the filly who has piloted to two wins in a row.

He said: "'Irish Lights has always promised to be something special.

"At her first start in a race she ran second to Rostova and that filly was flying at the time."

But Damien Oliver will be keen to snare his fifth win in the fillies-only race, having chalked up his 2000th as a jockey overall with a win in the Yalumba Stakes with Whobegotyou on Saturday.

He will partner 11.00 shot Silent Surround after asking to team up with her again after ending up third in the Edward Manifold Stakes at Flemington.

However, he may have to work his magic on Saturday thanks to the barrier draw, which has him and Silent Surround in one.
