Godolphin stable horse Kirklees is reported to have completed his best to trackwork since arriving in Melbourne ahead of the Melbourne Cup.

On Thursday morning jockey Kerrin McEvoy kicked him on from the 1400m and steadily increased his speed, finishing the last 1200m in 1min 16secs and the final 400m at 24secs.

Centrebet currently rates the horse as a 26.00 shot for Tuesday's season highlight at Flemington, with Viewed the current favourite at 5.50.

Kirklees disappointed in the Caulfield Cup earlier this month, finishing seventh, although he was forced wide through the race.

McEvoy said of his Thursday runout: "It was good work and I think he has improved since the Caulfield Cup."

Frankie Dettori is flying into Australia on Friday to pilot the horse, in a move certain to up the betting attention on the country's biggest race.

Kirklees galloped alone on Wednesday morning, without stablemate Crime Scene who was on striding work only.

Crime Scene is also in the running for the $5.65 million cup, on odds of 51.00 with Centrebet.

The horse may wear blinkers on Tuesday, depending on the decision of Godolphin head trainer Saeed bin Suroor, due to arrive at Sandown on Friday.
