Efficient is being watched closely in the run-up to Tuesday's Melbourne Cup as his stable continues to watch an old foreleg injury.

The John Sadler-trained horse is currently on odds of 13.00 for the season highlight and is considered among the front-runners in the betting.

But a Racing Victoria report last week said staff are watching the horse's condition closely due to the problem, which did not prevent Efficient winning the Turnbull Stakes last start.

Racing Victoria said on Thursday: "The stable's veterinary staff will monitor Efficient in the lead up to Tuesday's Melbourne Cup and a further examination by RVL veterinarians will take place prior to Efficient starting in the cup.

"The stable reassured the stewards that they won't accept for the Melbourne Cup if the veterinary advice indicates that it is not in the best interests of the horse to compete."

Efficient has been carrying the off foreleg problem for the last 12 to 18 months.

Zipping, from the same stable and at 25.00 for the cup with Betfair, was passed fine in the same round of inspections.

C'est La Guerre was also passed suitable for racing after suffering back pain following an unplaced performance in the Caulfield Cup. He is on odds of 38.00 with Betfair for the Flemington spectacular.
