NSW pride at stake in Wednesday's horse racing highlight

Trainer Gerald Ryan believes Melito can upset the odds and better current favourite Irish Lights in Wednesday's Thousand Guineas.

Saturday was seen as a bad outing for New South Wales horse racing after the region's top colts failed to live up their billing in the Caulfield Guineas, but Ryan thinks tomorrow's outing in Melbourne could lead to a better day.

Quoted by the Daily Telegraph, Ryan said: "It was not a good result for the Sydney horses on Saturday but hopefully it will be a different story on Wednesday."

Melito reportedly did well in work ran over the weekend and is on odds of 8.00 with Centrebet, with Irish Lights on 2.55 with the same bookmaker.

Ryan added: "Caulfield can be a funny track for horses who have not raced there before but going off her work this morning I can not see it being a problem."

Sister Madly, another NSW filly trained by Anthony Cummings, is on 7.00 with the same bookmaker.

Cummings is on something of a roll already this spring, having trained George Main Stakes winner Road To Rock and Caulfield Naturalism Stakes winner Red Lord.

However, both Cummings and Ryan face a tough test from Irish Lights, who has led the betting all week and is in barrier eight for tomorrow's 1600m race.
