NZ stayers improve Melbourne Cup betting odds
Posted on October 3rd 2009 by Pom de Turf
Two New Zealand horses have seen their Melbourne Cup prices drop this
week after promising appearances at Moonee Valley.
NZPA said Sand Hawk and Capecover saw their odds for the annual show
piece fall in the hours and days following the $100,000 Fulton Hogan
Mayoral Charity Handicap.
Sandhawk won the race and Capecover, the favourite beforehand, ended up
in fourth.
Sandhawk now stands on 190.00 for the Melbourne Cup on November 3 at
Flemington, while Capecover is on 42.00, with both sets of odds from
Betfair.
Last weekend Sand Hawk was seen as a huge Cup outsider, on 200-plus with
many bookmakers, before a strong showing saw him grab the win by a length.
Capecover trainer Alexander Fieldes has said he will go to the 2400m
Herbert Power next Saturday at Caulfield as he builds for the Melbourne Cup.
Sandhawk's jockey last Saturday, Damien Oliver, told racing channel TVN:
"He's a lovely horse, good to ride. I don't think he's up to the bigger
cups but there might be a little bit better race than today for him
along the way."
Early horse racing betting markets for the $5.5 million 3200m Melbourne
Cup show Vigor as the favourite on 13.50 with Betfair, followed by
Efficient on 14.50 with the same bookmaker.
