O'Brien duo ready to battle against barrier draw
Posted on October 15th 2009 by
Trainer Danny O'Brien says both his Caulfield Cup chances could do well if they get the rub of the green on Saturday.
Both Vigor and Master O'Reilly came out with short straws in the barrier draw for Saturday's race, ending up with 22 and 18 respectively.
Established star Master O'Reilly is on odds of 15.00 with IASbet, while the same bookmaker has rising talent Vigor at 11.00.
Flemington trainer O'Brien told Racing and Sports Vigor looked in good shape for the 2400m race and shouldn't be discounted.
He said: "He's had a very good last 12 months, he's won a lot more races than he's got beaten in.
"He'll just have to roll forward and he certainly shouldn't be getting any outside pressure, we have to hope he can get into a spot where he doesn't have to do too much work."
O'Brien also said Master O'Reilly could also be in the mix if he finds the right line.
"His weight for age form has been very good, he's better suited back to a handicap and he's better suited out to 2400m," O'Brien said.
"He needs the right run on Saturday and if he gets it he'll be in the finish."
He added he hoped both could go on to the Melbourne Cup and said both were unlikely to run again before the Flemington show piece if they do make the grade.
