Overseas pair in the betting for Geelong Cup

 Basaltico and fellow overseas contender Crime Scene are likely to be among the contenders for the Geelong Cup on Wednesday.

The 2400m group 3 race is among the midweek racing highlights ahead of the Cox Plate on Saturday October 24, with $200,000 in prize money up for grabs.

Victoria is the setting for what could be part of a route to the Melbourne Cup for Basaltico, trained by Luca Cumani.

He has 51.5kg for the cup and is well down the order of entry for the season show piece, on odds of 35.00 in Centrebet's Melbourne Cup market.

Quoted by the Geelong Advertiser, Racing Victoria international scout Leigh Jordon said: "Basaltico would be a real chance in the Geelong Cup. Luca Cumani would not be bringing him here unless he had a chance of winning.

"The plan of attack probably is for him to win the Geelong Cup and get a weight penalty to boost his chances of gaining a start in the Melbourne Cup. But with 51.5kg already, he will probably get a run already."

Crime Scene, who is from the Godolphin racing stable, has 53kg for the Melbourne Cup and doesn't need to clinch a victory on Wednesday to seal a place in the spring headliner.
