AFL: Hawthorn Getting $1.42 Odds In Round Two

March 23rd, 2014 by TJ Dilfer

Hawthorn kicked off their title defence, and their 2014 season, with a good win over Brisbane Lions on Saturday night, but it wasn’t at a canter by any stretch. A Hawks side that lacked some of its brighter stars nonetheless saw off a rally from the Lions to register the win and get things moving in the right direction for Hawthorn. And they’re in action against at the start of Round Two, running out against Essendon on Friday night in a game that sees them as the $1.42 bookies’ favourites.

Before that match, though, Thursday night sees Richmond against Carlton in a game in which both sides will be wanting to find a win. Neither of these teams have had the ideal start to the 2014 season: Richmond went down to an impressive Gold Coast performance, and they will be eager to bounce straight back. The fact is that, even at this early stage of the season, there will be real pressure on the side who loses this encounter between the Power and the Blues. Going into Round Three still searching for your first win might not be cause for panic, but it’s the sort of position that gives coaches troubled nights, we suspect. The bookies have Richmond as the $1.72 favourites going into the game, and there’s a key factor working in their favour: concerns in more than a few quarters about the levels of fitness in the Carlton camp. If the boys in blue jerseys are going to struggle in the last period, then they might not be great value at $2.05

And so the clash between Hawthorn and Essendon. The Bombers were able to put a difficult day or so behind them and turn in a display that was good enough the beat the Roos by just shy of 40 points, and it was good to see an impressive milestone for Dustin Fletcher brought up with a win. They’ll be up against it, though, against the reigning Premiers, and Essendon are a $2.80 bet on Sportsbet right now. The holders put in a good shift against a Lions side that challenged them strongly – the gap was just two points in the third quarter before the Hawks pulled away – and that will have given them good preparation for the meeting with Essendon. We won’t be betting against the Hawks at $1.42
