AFL: Hawthorn Odds-On To Stay Unbeaten At The Top

April 18th, 2014 by TJ Dilfer

Round Five of the 2014 AFL season will end on a high note, we hope, with what is a mouth-watering prospect, and what could be a classic: Hawthorn and Geelong meet on Monday night. Before that, there’s lots more action to enjoy, so take a look over the odds for Round Five, and get all the AFL odds you need just by following the links…

Easter Sunday sees three games coming your way, the first of them a clash between GWS and Adelaide that will most likely see the AFL debut of number one draft pick Tom Boyd. It’ll be a tough first game for the youngster, of course: the Giants are facing odds of $5.75 going into the game. You can expect that GWS will put up more resistance than they have managed in their last three encounters with the Crows – they lost all three by around 100 points – but it’s still going to be a mountain for them to climb. Adelaide are a $1.15 bet, and will be understandably confident of making amends for a home defeat by Sydney last time out.

Last week saw a bit of a breakthrough in Melbourne’s season, and a good win against Carlton that they’ve no doubt been enjoying since. That is, if coach Paul Roos has been drilling them ruthlessly to get them ready for another big game against the Suns. At the MCG on Easter Sunday, the Gold Coast boys will be keen to shrug off a defeat by Hawthorn in which they didn’t show their usual fight. You can expect a real scrap between these two on Sunday, then – it’s Gold Coast who go in as favourites at $1.32 while the odds on a Dees win are $3.30

The side that the Dees beat last week get their chance to bounce back against the Bulldogs on Sunday, but Carlton are the bookies’ outsiders at $2.30, and languishing down at the bottom of the ladder – a win on Sunday would be their first in the 2014 campaign. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, are looking to make two wins from four games into three wins from five, driving them closer to the top eight and casting a better light on their start to the season. With the odds favouring them at $1.55, Western fans will be expecting to see more points on their tally after the weekend.

And then Round Five comes to an epic conclusion with a clash that was circled in more than a few calendars long before the season started. It’s just a bonus for neutrals that both these sides have gone unbeaten so far – though there will only be one side with an unblemished record after Monday night. Hawthorn go into this massive game with the shorter odds at $1.53, and with some great form behind them. The Cats will be eager to avenge last year’s Preliminary Final defeat – and it was a close one – while a Hawthorn win will really establish them as the favourites in 2014. What chance do you give Geelong at $2.50?
