AFL: Long $11.00 Odds Facing GWS

March 11th, 2014 by TJ Dilfer

There will be no shortage of feeling when GWS and the Swans meet on Saturday night for the first time in the season proper, with the memory of a 40-point win by Sydney still fresh in the minds of fans, players and coaches alike. The Swans were arguably missing some key players for the NAB Challenge win over their cross-town rivals, and they had more gears than GWS, managing to stay clear for most of the game before easing away in the last quarter.

They’re the favourites again on the 15th, and getting odds of $1.04 on Sportsbet right now, so you can see pretty clearly which way the bookies think this one will go. GWS are at $11.00 for the win, and a long, long $75.00 bet to reverse the margin of the pre-season defeat and take the season opener by 40 points or more. It was Round 19 last season before there was a win beside GWS in the results round-up, and a first-round win over Sydney would likely send some of their fans into dangerous delirium, but they did grab a win over St Kilda in the NAB, so a few of their fans might be backing that dream start to the 2014 campaign.

Also on Saturday night, the Suns go up against a Richmond setup that will be setting their sights on wins over the top teams in the AFL this season, after disappointment last year. We all know about the Gold Coast development over the past couple of seasons, and they have some highlights on show in Gary Ablett and youngsters Jaeger O’Meara and Jack Martin. Martin is a Rising Star hopeful, and Ablett will be in the running for the Brownlow, but the Suns are $2.50 outsiders on Saturday, with the Tigers a $1.53 bet on Sportsbet right now…
