AFL: North Melbourne Odds $13.00 For The Pennant

January 30th, 2014 by TJ Dilfer

The messages coming out of the North Melbourne camp are about building for the future, with veteran Brent Harvey stepping down from the leadership group to give the youngsters coming up behind him a chance to get to grips with leading the club on their own terms. His experience won’t go amiss, either, in promoting the other players around him into leadership roles, and coach Brad Scott is in an enviable situation: he’s got lots of players coming through who will be the club’s leaders in the future. They’ll get their chance early on, with club captain Andrew Swallow sidelined with an Achilles injury. He’s keen to get back to playing, of course, and he’s made good progress over the off-season, but Swallow will know that Achilles injuries can be troublesome, and the support staff won’t want him to come back too soon if it means him failing to finish the season.

But amidst all the talk of building for the future, there’s a season about to start, and North Melbourne have the chance to make the most of a favourable draw in the first five games. They’ve got three winnable games to get them up and running – they’re $1.72 favourites in the first game against Essendon, and they’ve got the Western Bulldogs and Port Adelaide before they make a difficult trip to the SCG. But if they can win four out of the first five games, then they’ll be right in the mix for the mid-season push, and those $13.00 odds for them to take the pennant might look a bit tastier. Have a look, too, at a $3.00 bet for North Melbourne to finish in the top 4, and a $1.53 bet if it’s the top 8. The bookies clearly aren’t sure how this Kangaroos side will go, so there’s a $2.45 bet on offer for them to miss out on that top 8, too. They might be a great side to watch this season, North Melbourne, but they’re one to watch closely, too, if you’re looking for a bet on them.
