AFL Odds: Can The Power Topple Hawthorn?

September 17th, 2014 by TJ Dilfer

So we’re predicting a close final on Friday night, and if that one is as tight as it could be, then those of a nervous disposition might want to look away when the Hawks and the Power meet on Saturday. A glance over the AFL odds we’ve got for you at the other end of that link there will show you more than just great markets and futures – it’ll show you that Hawthorn are the bookies’ favourites to reach their fourth final in as many years…

But the Power have had a cracking season – one in which the highs have been very high, and the lows very painful indeed. They looked for all money like they might have the minor premiership sewn up at one stage, but they managed to lose their form and let that slip away. Then they looked like they might have reached their high point for the season too early, as they lost games and slipped places on the ladder. In the end they rallied to finish in fifth, and they’ve put together a finals run that sees them in a Preliminary Final against the reigning champions. Their fans won’t be the only ones who will be thinking that they can beat the Hawks, either. After all, they’ve done it once already this season, and after their demolition of the Dockers last week, they’ll carry good momentum into Saturday’s final.

Of course, the Hawks won’t see it that way. If there’s any team in the AFL who will feel that the finals are theirs for the taking, then it’s Hawthorn. A win will mean that the Hawks have been in four Grand Finals in four seasons, so last year’s champions will be confident – and rightly so. Theirs is the best game to contain and neutralise Port Adelaide’s attack threats, and they will feel that the real showdown is going to be in the Grand Final against the Swans, who pipped them to the minor premiership. There’s danger in looking past the Power, of course, but Hawthorn have been consistently putting in strong performances in 2014, and the AFL odds you can see at the other end of the link will show you that they go in as favourites…
