AFL Odds: It’s Swans Vs. Hawks In The Final

September 23rd, 2014 by TJ Dilfer

So it’s going to be a showdown between the Swans and the Hawks in Saturday’s Grand Final – and we can hardly think of two more worthy or deserving teams that these two to contest the last game of the 2014 season. It’s the very best attack over the course of the season against the very strongest defence, and when you look at the AFL odds for the Grand Final, you can see that the bookies have the Swans as the stronger chance of the two.

But that could easily be because of the two very different routes through the preliminary finals that these two sides took. The Swans, who come into the Grand Final as $1.62 favourites on Sportsbet right now, blasted through North Melbourne to claim their right to take on the Hawks, chalking up a win by an impressive 71-point margin. It was the sort of display that will have their fans expecting a second Premiership in three years, and it has already got them queuing up for tickets to watch the Swans claim it.

But write off the Hawks at your peril. Throughout the 2014 AFL season, the Hawks have epitomised consistency, and they’ve continued to find attacking threats even in the face of injuries to key players. The upshot is that they have firepower to spare – they might be the bookies’ second favourites, but you don’t need to win footie games by 71 points to take the laurels. If the bookies have the Hawks at longer odds of $2.35 because they had to fight off a strong Port Adelaide rally in their preliminary final, then they might be being naive. The Hawthorn players were in no doubt against the Power that they were in a final, and that could just be the very best preparation for another one. We saw an interesting stat today: the Hawks have won three preliminary finals in three years, but only with a total of 13 points to spare. That’s not many over three games, is it? One point would be enough, of course, to bring the flag home to Hawthorn, but can the Hawks find a way to break down the Swans?
