AFL Odds: New Year’s Resolutions

January 1st, 2015 by TJ Dilfer

It’s a fresh new start for the year for you, and it could well be for the AFL, too. It might not feel too much like an optimistic new dawn for you this morning, but no doubt that will wear off over the course of the day, and you’ll be stuck with those New Year’s resolutions you made in haste last night. Which got us thinking: which AFL coaches will have New Year’s resolutions, and how will they affect the way you see their teams’ AFL odds?

You would be forgiven for thinking that Hawthorn boss Alastair Clarkson’s wishlist for the 2015 season is a short one – and you’d probably be right. After a season that saw his side overcome some real adversity (including his own absence for more than a month!) and still ended in triumph, Clarkson and the rest of the Hawthorn staff will be asking for stability in 2015, and you’d think that if they get that, they will be a very difficult proposition to beat in the new season.

One of the sides who will be the most likely to challenge the Hawks in 2015 will be Sydney Swans, and they have the added incentive of a Grand Final defeat to avenge. Coach John Longmire will be resolving to be that little bit tougher, and that little bit more ruthless, and that little bit better, and he’ll be hoping that will make the difference in the AFL odds for 2015. The Swans are at odds of $4.25 to make 2015 a winning year, ahead of the Power at $5.50. Port Adelaide boss Ken Hinkley’s New Year’s resolution – the same as his team, we reckon – will be to not give it away when they’ve done all the hard work. Last season saw a fantastic run from the Power, but ultimately, they fell away: are you betting they can do better in 2015?
