AFL Odds: The Final Round

August 27th, 2014 by TJ Dilfer

The last round of the 2014 AFL regular season is here, and there are, by our reckoning, half a dozen games that are effectively finals for the teams involved. The results of those six games are going to make or break seasons, they’re going to break hearts, and they’re going to make all the difference to the AFL odds you’re seeing for the finals. So today we’re going to have a look at three of the key games, coming back to the others later on. Fasten your seatbelts, AFL fans – there’s some serious turbulence ahead…

Collingwood have been involved in the finals for the past eight years straight, and when their Friday night fixture against Hawthorn was first scheduled, it had pundits and fans licking their lips for a top-of-the-ladder clash. That isn’t quite how things have panned out, though that’s no fault of the Hawks. For Collingwood, a win on Friday still might not secure a finals place, but they need to win to be in with a chance at all. A string of injuries to key players have made that very hard, of course, and the odds are stacked against the Pies. Those injuries make you wonder if they could be competitive in the finals if they do get there, but they won’t be thinking about anything other than getting over the line.

Bombers fans will take heart from the thumping that the Blues received at the hands of Port Adelaide last round, because they will want to make absolutely sure they beat Carlton on Saturday. If they don’t win then their finals spot isn’t written off, but Essendon will want to go into the finals with a win behind them – a bit of momentum is always better than scraping through with a defeat…

Saturday sees the Power and Fremantle lock horns – not for a finals spot, but for a double chance in the finals, which could be like gold dust to the side who wins this one. As we’ve already said, a win in the last round of the regular season is a big psychological boost to a side, and that’s magnified here: a top-four spot gives you a much greater chance of progressing right to the business end of the season, and you’ve got to be in the big games to win them!
