AFL Odds: Will New Ticket Policy Mean Bigger Crowds?

December 24th, 2014 by TJ Dilfer

There’s no doubt we still love a game of footie, but there were rumblings all the way through last season from fans in all corners of the country, and from the AFL Fans Association, about the unnecessary difficulty of just getting hold of tickets to watch AFL games, especially for big matches. That suggests to us that people were wanting to get down to the games, but that they were put off by the difficulty – we certainly wouldn’t put the drop-off in attendance down to a lack of fans, especially given the success of online betting sites, and the sheer volume of people checking out those AFL odds each and every week.

And it seems like the AFL have been listening to the concerns of fans and the AFL Fans Association – this year it sounds like there will be a different approach to the whole process of ticketing, according to AFL General Manager of Clubs and Operations, Travis Auld: ‘this year’s ticketing framework posed a number of problems for those fans attending MCG and Etihad Stadium matches, particularly in relation to fully reserved seat matches. As a result, next year’s ticketing model is very much a case of going back to basics – the AFL and clubs are committed to removing as many obstacles as possible for those fans looking to attend AFL matches. Fans no longer have to worry about complex match categories and seating maps.’ Which is good news, it sounds like – the AFL Fans Association described it as a ‘win for fans’, and that sounds good to us. What also sounds like a decent idea is bringing the clubs themselves more into the process of making tickets available and setting their prices, says Auld: ‘clubs know their supporters better than anyone, so it makes sense for them to take an active role in setting ticket prices.’

So it sounds like there will be fewer reasons for fans to complain in 2015, and hopefully more fans on seats watching great footie games. All that remains for you to do is check out the AFL odds to see the games that you want to put a bet on, and maybe the games you want to get along to watch, too…
