AFL: Port Adelaide Outsiders At $2.30

March 12th, 2014 by TJ Dilfer

Last time Carlton played Port Adelaide, they overturned a 39-point deficit at the middle of the third quarter to squeak home by a single point – and it was a win that took them through to the finals. When you talk about momentum in sport, that might just be the sort of thing you’re talking about. It’s not entirely certain that the sting of that defeat won’t be a great motivator for the players who run out for the Power, though, as much as it will be a boost to the Carlton boys who were a part of it. Looking at the outrights on Sportsbet right now, you can see that Port Adelaide are an outside $2.30 bet to put to bed the memories of last year’s defeat – Carlton are at $1.62 to register a win and get their season off to a great start.

Both these sides are facing a mixed bag in the first five games, and they’ll both be keen to get a win out of the first to put themselves in a much better position come Round Six. With the odds in their favour, it will be Carlton who will be the more confident going into the game, but there will be some concern over the absence of Paul Gallen from the Blues line-up. Port Adelaide’s injury list offers them better news, with Schulz, Trengove and Carlile hopefuls for the game on Sunday, and their addition might lean things a little more the way of the Power. There is a feeling that Port Adelaide’s appearance in the semi-final last season was a pleasing bonus for their fans, and they’re not necessarily expected to reproduce the same this year. They will be looking for consistency, though, in 2014, and a good performance in Round One will help towards that no end.

Checking on Sportbet right now, we like the look of a Halftime-Fulltime Double that has Carlton leading at both at $2.10, while a repeat of that comeback that won it for them last time out is longer odds – $7.40 if Port are winning at halftime, but lose the game. Elsewhere, look at either team by fewer than 16 points at $2.70, and of course there are all the Round One odds and some good Round One tips, too…
