AFL: West Coast Odds-On Favourites At $1.30

March 19th, 2014 by TJ Dilfer

Round One of the 2014 AFL season rumbles on, and it’s been a fantastic reminder of all the things we love about the AFL – there have been some great games for the neutral to enjoy, and there have definitely been games for the fans to relish. And that first round of games comes to its conclusion on Sunday night when West Coast and the Bulldogs meet to get their seasons underway.

At the tail-end of last season, the Bulldogs were one of the most exciting teams around – and a pleasure to watch. Their 15th place finish was more reflective of their poor early-season performance than it was of where they were as a team towards the end of the year, and fans will be hoping that they’ve carried that form into 2014, and that they can avoid that same dismal start to the campaign. The reality is that they will struggle to claw back enough points to be competitive if they start badly, and they will want to overturn those $3.50 odds to beat the Eagles and get their season off to the best possible start.

The West Coast Eagles, though, have come out on top in four of the last five games between these two sides – only the most recent has gone to the Bulldogs. The Eagles camp will be hoping that it’s the longer-term trend that repeats itself on Sunday night, and that last year’s win by the Bulldogs doesn’t signal a shift in power between the two clubs. The Eagles have a lot to do in 2014. In their first post-Worsfold year, all eyes will be on their final ladder position, and it might be ambitious to think they will get past last year’s 13th place. Still, a new era is what’s being talked about at West Coast, and you never can tell how much will have changed when the dust settles. Certainly, new coach Adam Simpson will want to make the most of his side’s advantage and get things off to a winning start: the Eagles are a $1.30 bet…
