Cricket Odds: Grieving Aussies Ready To Take On India

December 11th, 2014 by G Waldorf

There has been a note of terrible tragedy in Australian cricket since the loss of Philip Hughes, to the Australian team, to the game, and worst of all to his friends and family. Obviously, the thoughts of many have been on the best way to honour his memory – and at least for some of his friends, an opportunity for a fitting testimonial is already here: Australia meet India in the first Test of a four-Test series this week, and the Cricket odds are telling us that it’s the men in baggy greens who are the favourites to win the opener.

Obviously, the past two weeks have been incredibly hard for everyone involved with Cricket Australia, no-one more than the players. So you would have to say that theirs hasn’t been the best preparation by any stretch. It will have been a difficult thing to do to strap on the pads for the first time after what happened two weeks ago, and to run in to bowl, too. Add to that the record of the visitors away from their home soil, which is more than a little bit patchy, and the absence of skipper and steadying influence MS Dhoni, and you can probably see why the Cricket odds have Australia as the clear favourites going into the first Test and the series: the Aussies have odds of $1.22 next to their name to take the series, and it’s $1.70 to claim the first Test. At those odds, you’d have to be tempted to back Michael Clarke and his men to win an emotionally-charged first Test, and give themselves every chance of securing the series…
