Essendon $1.58 Favourites In NAB Challenge

February 24th, 2014 by TJ Dilfer

Tuesday night’s NAB Challenge fixture is a clash between Essendon and Port Adelaide that both sides will be looking to win after disappointing results in their first outings of the season. Their fans will all be saying that the focus is on the regular season, and the that the NAB Challenge amounts to a series of warm-up games, but it’s funny how the only fans promoting that sort of talk are the fans of sides who’ve underperformed in the pre-season – there’s no doubt that both clubs will be looking for a first win of the season come Tuesday night.

And Port Adelaide have named a stronger squad than the one that went down heavily to the Crows in their first NAB fixture, with the inclusion of Hamish Harlett no doubt cheering Power supporters after his shoulder injury, and Chad Wingard and Jay Schulz alongside him in the squad. They’re getting odds of $2.30 on Sportsbet as of today.

It’s Essendon, though, who will be the favourites to turn the results around in the NAB on Tuesday – they’re at $1.58, and there are some big names in the squad that’s expected to make that win happen. Paul Chapman is getting the headlines in the build-up, and he’ll be supported by Dustin Fletcher, Michael Hurley, Brendon Goddard and skipper Jobe Watson – none of whom were a part of the Bombers side who narrowly lost out to the Suns. That loss was by no means as comprehensive as the one handed to Port Adelaide in the first round of NAB fixtures, but it will have hurt Essendon all the same, and so we’re expecting to see the Bombers come out with a point to prove – that point being that they’re too strong for Port Adelaide. Take a look at the Bombers to win it by fewer than 40 at $2.25 or by more than 40 at $4.50. Jay Shulz is the shortest odds for the opening goal, at $11.00, if you fancy a punt on that…
