Harness Racing Odds: Can Baby Bling Bow Out In Style?
October 9th, 2014 by Pom de TurfA horse that has a home in the hearts of more than a few fans of Australian Harness Racing, Baby Bling has a glittering career behind her – one that includes a spell at the very top of the tree, when she was considered without any real disagreement to be the best mare in Australia. There will be lots of punters interested in the Racing odds for the Ladyship Mile, then – lots of them because she’s got talent to spare, and lots more out of sentimentality, we suspect…
And you could forgive owner Harvey Kaplan more than a little dose of sentimentality himself over what must be one of his prize horses, if not the very best he has seen. It looks as though things are shaping for the Ladyship Mile to be the race that concludes the career of the 7-year-old Baby Bling, and Kaplan would dearly love to see her end on a high note. And then he has some other difficult decisions to make, it sounds like: ‘this will be her final racing campaign, she has been such a great mare for all of the owners but she will always be very special to me because she provided me with my first Group 1 as an owner. I remember that win (2011 Australian Oaks) like it was yesterday and I can clearly remember celebrating the win with the late Kaye Kilgour and her daughter Sam which is something that I will never forget. She trialled very well last week at Menangle but she will be better for the run this weekend and everything is being aimed at the Ladyship Mile which could be her final race. In the short term we will aim her at the Robin Dundee next month and it would be great if she could win that because that would give her automatic entry to the Ladyship Mile. Asking me to name my favourite horse is like asking me to pick a favourite child, but she will always be very special to me. No decision has been made at this stage as to what will happen with her first foal. Obviously I breed to sell but do you keep a filly and sell a colt, who knows, there is a lot of water to flow under the bridge between now and then. I just hope she goes in foal.’
