NRL: Cowboys $1.33 Odds To Beat Warriors

March 18th, 2014 by TJ Dilfer

It’s shaping up to be a busy weekend on our sofa, with two great NRL games on Friday night that will need watching, and three more come Saturday that we’ll be reluctant to miss. Both the Roosters and the Rabbitohs are in action, and we’ll be watching to see if they can live up to the pre-season billing after an interesting opening couple of rounds. The Cowboys have been thrown into the mix by plenty of pundits predicting success in 2014, as well, and we’ll be watching them, too, when they take on the New Zealand Warriors on Saturday night. Before that game, though, there’s a fixture between the Panthers and the Bulldogs to enjoy, and a Sharks vs Dragons clash that the bookies have as the closest encounter of the round.

In Round 2 the Panthers were pipped by a single point by Melbourne Storm, and that will have hurt them, no doubt, but they showed some real promise – promise that has plenty of people predicting big things from them in 2014. And one of those people is Bulldogs coach Des Hasler, who described them as the form side in the NRL at the moment, and who is looking forward to a stiff challenge on Saturday. Penrith are the $1.60 favourites going into the game, but the Bulldogs might be worth a close look at $2.25, especially on the back of their biggest ever head-to-head win over the Sharks in Round Two…

Next up are those same Sharks, who will still be stinging from the 42 points that Canterbury piled on them. They will be looking to bounce back strongly against the Dragons, but that will be no easy task against a side that handed yet another disappointing defeat to the Warriors last time out. The Sharks were without key men against the Bulldogs, but there were worrying signs: their attack looked blunt and they were unable to convert possession in good positions into points. The result speaks for itself, and the Sharks will want to make their odds of $1.95 look long come Saturday. The Dragons are the favourites, though, and getting $1.80 to follow up their smash-and-grab in New Zealand with another win.

And the Warriors will have it all on to deal with the disappointment of another defeat at Eden Park before they make a difficult trip to North Queensland to face a Cowboys side who could be in serious contention this year come finals time. The Warriors, when they were putting together their preparations for the first few rounds of the 2014 season, would not have anticipated being in such a difficult spot, but there’s a great deal of pressure on them to say it’s only Round Three. On the positive side, it’s only Round Three, but there will be plenty of twitchy Warriors fans wondering whether to back their side at $3.10. The Cowboys are the strong favourites at $1.33
