NRL Odds: Cartwright Comes With Pedigree

January 15th, 2015 by TJ Dilfer

It’s amazing how many fathers and sons you see in professional sport, and at the highest level, too. Whether it’s genetic, or if it’s because the players who make it know how to encourage the same success in their kids, we don’t know, but it’s always interesting to watch the next generation emerging.

Which is exactly what could be happening at Penrith – but how does the prospect of young Bryce Cartwright affect how you see their NRL odds of $10.00 to make the 2015 season their own. He’s a young player who could make quite an impact, with an impressive 113kg to throw around at only the age of 20. He comes with serious pedigree, too: he’s the son of former Panther David, nephew of John and grandson of the Panthers inaugural coach Merv. Great things will be expected of him, and current Panthers coach Ivan Cleary is pleased with his prospects: ‘he is not a small man, he is a typical Cartwright. Bryce is incredibly talented. I am certainly glad he is in our system. He was NYC player of the year across the whole competition in 2013 and this year, the brief glimpse we got of him in first grade showed we really couldn’t keep him down there (in under 20s). It was a shame when he got injured but that is the way it goes. He has a very, very bright future.’

That injury Cleary mentioned has been an early test of the young man’s character, and he’ll be itching to get back into action after an ankle injury that saw him laid up for weeks. When he does get back to full fitness, he could be scrapping for a place in the Panthers first time – what impact you think he’ll make, and if he can make those NRL odds for the Panthers look long is yours to decide…
