NRL Odds: Here Come The Nines

January 21st, 2015 by TJ Dilfer

When they burst onto our TV screens last year (unless, of course, you were there in the flesh, in which case it’s safe to say we’re jealous), the Auckland Nines were an untried format, and we weren’t at all sure what to expect. What we got was a very enjoyable pre-season exhibition, and a chance to see how some of the franchises might go in the season proper (and, of course, a chance to update how we see those NRL odds for the coming season).

So the bar is set pretty high for this year’s Auckland Nines, and it’s fair to say there’s lots of anticipation amongst fans here in Australia and all around the world. What the fans are looking for is a chance to see some of the best players in the NRL (and so the best Rugby League players in the world, arguably) playing a free-flowing, entertaining brand of Rugby League. And from what we’re hearing in advance of the 2015 tournament, that’s what’s going to be in store. In fact, the only people not looking forward to the tournament seem to be the coaches of the various franchises, who have been looking at the hard pitches over in New Zealand (which are being prepared for the Cricket World Cup) and worrying about the injury toll that the Nines might take on their players – and especially on key players. The NRL, we get the impression, has had to do a fair bit of persuading to get the franchises in line, and to encourage them to turn out their strongest sides. They’ve mostly got their own way, we think, though there will be a few big names in cotton wool – rest assured that there will be plenty more showcasing their skills before the new season.

And in terms of betting, it’s the local boys who are the favourites in the NRL odds we’re seeing. The Warriors have picked a strong squad to contest the Nines, too, so there will be a degree of expectation on them. What effect that has remains to be seen – you’d think that any one of a number of teams could win the 2015 Auckland Nines, but the bookies think it’s the Warriors who look the likeliest. Where’s your money?
